How to Sound Authentic in English (and Avoid Being Boring or Misunderstood)!

If there is one complaint that I hear again and again from my students it is this:

“English is tiring!”

I get it. It can feel like steam is coming out of your ears and your head on fire having to think in a non-native language all day long, speak in a way that others understand you, and try to decode crazy American speech that you certainly never learned in school. Right?

What if I were to tell you that instead of trying to keep up, speaking fast, never bluffing- what you need to do is to SLOW down instead.

I saw this reel on IG and it made me laugh out loud. It reminded me of my student, Maria, from Russia who said, “Americans sound like they are always acting.” The way American English reflects emotion goes beyond just learning pronunciation.

To soften your voice, to add a friendly tone, and to sound engaging, you need to elongate your vowels.

Which exercise from the video will you try?
