How long will it take me to improve my pronunciation?

The first step of change is awareness. Most clients have never even thought about “American” English sounds or how to mimic them. After the first class, clients are often excited to practice. Keep in mind, improvement depends on your motivation level combined with the amount of time you dedicate to learning and practicing. It takes time for newly learned speech patterns to become more automatic when speaking American English. Most students notice a difference after three months.

Is pronunciation important?

Some clients think that pronunciation is an “advanced” problem to be handled after learning tons of vocabulary and mastering grammar. However, building pronunciation skills often boosts vocabulary and helps to overcome grammar difficulties. Imagine having perfect grammar, but no one understands you because of poor pronunciation. That’s why it’s so important. You can practice all skills at the same time.

Can I completely change my accent?

You can modify your accent and be easily understood through training. However, it’s very difficult to “lose it” completely. Research shows that people who learn a second-language after puberty, often do not acquire native-like pronunciation due to neurological factors. The good news is that it is possible to soften your accent at least 50 to 70% or more depending on your time effort, your goals, and your motivation level. The result is that people will focus less on your accent and more on what you have to say. Rather than “speaking like an American”, remember that the goal is to have a clear, confident power voice!

Which class type is best for me?

Please refer to the Who Should Learn? Page or to the Plans section above. If you still have doubts, don’t hesitate to send an email. Take advantage of the flexible options. You choose 25 or 50 minute classes. You decide if you want a regular, weekly schedule and how many times per week. Or maybe you just want a class once in while? No problem, you can do that too.

Do you provide other services besides accent training?

Yes, other services are built into our accent programs including American slang and idioms, fine-tuning grammar, public speaking skills, fluency mindset, as well as voice quality practice. Please let us know what your goals are during the first class.

What are the classes like?

All classes are conducted via Skype/Zoom. For best results, please take your class with a computer or a tablet. It’s also best to use earphones and to have a good internet connection. Most students benefit from having a mirror handy as well as a voice recorder to practice new sounds. Classes utilize many technology features so you will never be bored!

How proficient in English must I be? How is ESL different?

Accent tranining is not for True Beginners. You must have a basic command of English before working on pronunciation. Most ESL programs teach vocabulary, written skills, and grammar of English, but often do not focus on speaking skills. Yax Accent courses help you fine-tune your language skills while helping you feel clear and confident while you speak and understand American English.

Is online training as effective as in person?

Online training is extremely beneficial! You can learn from the comfort of your home or workplace and feel more relaxed. Also, it’s more flexible for your busy schedule.

Will learning the American accent cause me to lose my identity?

Not at all. This training will teach you how to use American pronunciation in situations when you want to be understood more easily. A more neutral accent is highly valued in the U.S. workplace. Accent is one of the factors that influences people's perception of foreigners in a society including the workplace. Employers often require good communication skills in their employees and having a softened accent as opposed to a “thick” accent boosts effectiveness.
