How to Speak Faster American English

Do you ever feel like Americans speak TOO FAST? You understand the main message, but maybe miss a few words here and there? How do Americans speak so quickly?

It’s important to know that American English is a language that doesn’t pronounce word by word. Rather, certain words are given stress, and others are reduced. I have a whole post about that here for you to learn more about it. So, you need to speak in CHUNKS rather than each word at a time. How do you link words to pronounce them clearly in English?

There are a few hacks that native English speakers naturally use to speak faster, but the easiest one to start with is to drag the final consonant to the next word that starts with a vowel.

Examples:

  • Look at = loo kat                           Loo kat Sara!

  • Think about = thin kabout             I need to thin kabout it some more.

  • Drink a lot = drin ka lot                 Make sure to drin ka lodda water to stay healthy.
